Your Home Router May Be Vulnerable

Hacked Home RouterI follow the WordFence.com/blog, and recently they published a report the scared the heck out of me. I’m also in the WordPress design and hosting business so the was very important to me.

Tens of thousands of hacked home routers are attacking WordPress websites.

When these home routers are compromised the attacker has full access to the home network behind each router and can work at hacking into workstations, mobile devices, home cameras, temperature control units and anything else connected to home WiFi.

At Wordfence, we make a firewall and malware scanner that protects over 2 million WordPress websites. We also monitor attacks on those sites to determine which IPs are attacking them and we block those IPs in real-time through a blacklist.

Tuesday morning we published a post showing how 6.7% of all attacks we see on WordPress sites come from hacked home routers. In the past month alone we have seen over 57,000 unique home routers being used to attack WordPress sites. Those home networks are now being explored by hackers who have full access to them via the hacked home router. They can access workstations, mobile devices, wifi cameras, wifi climate control and any other devices that use the home WiFi network… Read the entire details.

By popular request, we have created a utility that you can use to check if your home router is vulnerable to the most common vulnerability we are seeing. Scan your home router here.
